Mrs. Alice Bertels is one of the gifted teachers in the WERC program at Washburn Rural Middle School. She is in charge of 7th grade IEP’s.  She leads groups in the following areas: art, sign language, literary focus, History Day, creative writing, and community service.

 

She has been teaching since 1985. She taught as a deaf/hard hearing teacher for several years, then taught 4th grade at State Street Elementary in Topeka, KS. She has been teaching at WRMS since fall of 2003.

 

Mrs. Bertels grew up in Winchester, KS and graduated from Jefferson County North H.S.  She earned a B.S. in Elementary Education from Kansas State University, an M.S. of Special Education focusing on Deaf Education from University of Kansas, and an M.S. of Special Education focusing on Gifted Education from Kansas State University.

 

Mrs. Bertels lives in Topeka with her husband, Terry. They have two daughters; Allison and Emily, and one black cat.  Mrs. Bertels has published a children’s book titled:  John Steuart Curry:  The Road Home. For more information about the book you may go to www.alicebertels.com.

Mr. Ensley is one of the gifted teachers in the WERC program at Washburn Rural Middle School.  He is in charge of 8th grade IEP’s.  He leads groups in the following areas:  Model U.N; Quiz Bowl; Robotics; Environmental Education; Knowledge Master Open; History Day and Stock Market Game.

 

Mr. Ensley has been teaching for 31 years, 25 of which were at Logan Junior High School in the Seaman district, where he taught U.S. History and coached football and track.  Prior to that, Mr. Ensley taught at Pleasant Hill Elementary, also in the Seaman district.

 

Mr. Ensley grew up in Dover, Kansas, just west of Washburn Rural Middle School.  He attended Washburn University and Emporia State University.  He lives in Topeka with his wife, Pamela. They have three children, Jeff, Stephanie, and Megan, and a granddaughter, Katy.
